Community High School students receive daily instruction in reading and writing.

• ELA instruction is divided into two distinct classes: Literature and English.
• Literature classes focus on strengthening reading skills through targeted remediation and instruction. Students engage with a wide range of texts, including novels, plays, short stories, and poetry.
• English classes focus on strengthening writing skills through targeted remediation and instruction. Lessons focus on the fundamentals of grammar, punctuation, sentence and paragraph construction, and essay organization.

The Comprehensive Health course at Community High School is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve and maintain lifelong health and wellness. The course empowers students to access, interpret, and apply essential health information, enabling them to make informed, health-enhancing decisions in their daily lives.

Instruction covers a broad range of health education content areas, including:

• Community and consumer health
• Environmental health
• Family life (including human sexuality, parenting, relationships, human growth and development)
• Mental and emotional health
• Injury prevention and safety
• Nutrition and personal fitness
• Disease prevention and control
• Substance use and abuse
   

In addition to health knowledge, the program emphasizes the development of self-esteem, social interaction skills, and psychomotor abilities, promoting overall well-being and a foundation for lifelong healthy living.

The Community High School History Department provides a traditional high school sequence of courses that includes:

• World History I
• US History I
• World History II
• US History II

The History Department curriculum provides students with a comprehensive and engaging exploration of global and American history. The program includes an in-depth study of World History, Civics, and Government. Through these courses, students gain a deeper understanding of significant historical events, movements, and figures that have shaped societies.

A central goal of the curriculum is to help students develop a firm grasp of historical concepts by analyzing the human experience across different cultures and eras. Students investigate how civilizations have evolved, political systems have emerged, and societies have sought to govern and organize themselves throughout history.

In addition to traditional historical content, the curriculum integrates geography and the study of contemporary global and national issues, enabling students to draw connections between the past and the present. This approach fosters an awareness of current events and their historical roots, encouraging students to think critically about the world around them.

Throughout the curriculum, there is a strong emphasis on developing critical thinking and study skills.

The Mathematics Department provides a traditional high school sequence of courses that includes:

• Basic Skills
• Consumer Math
• Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2
• Geometry
• Math Analysis
• Pre-Calculus with Trigonometry
• Calculus

Courses offer remediation of basic skills and instruction in the practical application of learned concepts. The mathematics program uses a multi-sensory approach involving the use of manipulatives to aid students in learning not only basic skills but also algebraic and geometric concepts.

Through visual, auditory, and tactile stimulation, the students can grasp and retain the material necessary for development and advancement. In addition to covering the traditional college preparatory math training, we also offer a money management course that allows students to solve mathematical problems they will use throughout their lives.

The Community High School Reading Department brings decades of experience and specialized expertise in reading instruction. All reading specialists are either Orton-Gillingham Certified or trained through an IMSLEC-accredited program.

Students who require additional reading support receive direct, explicit, and structured remedial instruction through a multisensory approach grounded in the Orton-Gillingham methodology. This evidence-based instruction targets the development of foundational reading skills, including decoding, phonics, morphology, vocabulary, and fluency.

Instruction is delivered in one-on-one or small-group settings, depending on each student’s individual needs, allowing for personalized attention and targeted skill development. In addition to pull-out intervention, reading specialists may also provide push-in support within content-area classrooms, helping students apply learned reading strategies across subject areas.

The Community High School Physical Education courses are designed to offer students various sports, fitness, and recreational activities. The program focuses on building self-esteem, enhancing social interaction, and developing psychomotor skills toward lifelong activity.  Adaptive Physical Education is provided to all students for whom such services are mandated.

The Science Department's goal is to foster the development of scientifically literate students who possess the understanding of scientific concepts and processes required for personal and societal decision-making. All courses include discussions and lectures emphasizing organization, study skills, critical thinking, and lab activities. The lab activities reinforce content and assess student understanding of applied concepts.

The History Department's curriculum covers world history and a three-part sequence of United States history, civics, and government. Students develop an understanding of historical concepts through the study of human experience. They examine how societies have attempted to control and govern themselves over centuries. Studying geography and contemporary affairs is an integral part of the coursework—we emphasize the development of critical thinking skills and study skills.

The Community High School Spanish Department supports the development of comprehensive language skills, focusing on speaking, listening, reading, writing, and cultural competency.

The curriculum is designed to broaden students’ understanding of language and culture beyond their own, emphasizing meaningful communication that enables them to engage in conversations, interpret both spoken and written Spanish, and develop a deeper appreciation for the perspectives and practices of other cultures.

Students make meaningful connections to other academic subjects, draw comparisons between their language and culture and those they are learning about, and actively engage with local and global communities. Ultimately, the Spanish program aims to foster language proficiency and intercultural awareness, preparing students to be thoughtful and effective communicators in an increasingly interconnected world.

Study skills classes and tutorials are offered to assist students who experience difficulty in the independent completion of homework assignments.

Assistive technology tools and strategies are embedded within the educational program to enhance student learning, accessibility, and independence. Depending on individual needs, students may benefit from a range of supports such as audiobooks, speech-to-text software, text-to-speech programs, and word prediction tools. These technologies are selected and implemented based on each student's unique learning profile.
