Academic Philosophy

The Community School was founded in 1968 by Beatrice Lieben, Ph.D., to serve the bright child with learning and attentional disabilities.  For over 56 years, the school’s primary goal has been to help children achieve a level of classroom performance fully commensurate with their abilities, intellects, and talents.  Community High School provides students in grades 9-12 with skilled remedial support and a challenging academic curriculum, taught within the framework of an educational plan developed to meet each student’s needs and learning style, offering a complete high school experience for the bright adolescent with learning disabilities.

Through small group instruction and innovative teaching, Community High School exposes students to the wide range of information and activities available in the educational mainstream. Community High School is also committed to ensuring that students’ learning experiences extend beyond academics, encouraging each student to reach his or her personal best – not only in the classroom but as contributing members of their community.

The school’s mission remains strong and certain – that each and every one of our students can excel and that all of them deserve the opportunity to reach their fullest potential.
